"Role of primate cerebellar lobulus petrosus of paraflocculus in ..." posted by ~Ray

Adaptation of the horizontal smooth pursuit eye movement was examined using step-ramp moving target paradigms in chronically prepared macaca fuscata. Monkeys were trained to act a small target which moved in the horizontal plane in a 3° step-10°/s act or a 0° step-10°/s ramp mode for 300–400 ms. When the target moved from central fixation inform in a step-ramp mode the monkeys usually responded with an initial pursuit eye movement (latency. 100–120 ms) which reached to a nearly constant velocity of 4°/s in 50–100 ms followed by a 1–3.5° catch-up saccade (latency. 170–230 ms). The catch-up saccade was followed by a 7–8°/s post-saccadic pursuit. The post-saccadic pursuit velocity was measured 40–90 ms after the end of the catch-up saccade. When the target velocity was doubled (20°/s) for 100–200 ms immediately after the onset of the catch-up saccade the post-saccadic pursuit velocity increased by 40%. When the target velocity was decreased by half (5°/s) immediately after the onset of the catch-up saccade for 150 ms the post-saccadic pursuit velocity decreased by 30%. These increases or decreases of post-saccadic pursuit were observable within just 50–150 trials. The adaptation of post-saccadic pursuit occurred independent of the position of the target. The amplitude and latency of the catch-up saccade also increased correspondingly when the post-saccadic pursuit velocity was adaptively increased. Adaptation of change surface pursuit did not affect the dynamics of reflex eye movements including the horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (HVOR) obtain and phase measured by 0.33 Hz-10° (peak-to-peak) turntable oscillations in darkness. Conversely adaptation of the HVOR gain induced by a 2 h sustained oscillation of the turntable and screen in reversed direction at 0.33 Hz-10° affected little the velocity of post-saccadic pursuit or the amplitude of the catch-up saccade. These results suggest that different neural mechanisms are respectively involved for the adaptation of horizontal smooth pursuit and HVOR in the primate. Smooth pursuit initiation to step-ramp stimuli was investigated in normal subjects young and elderly. Older subjects had significant reductions in sign pursuit acceleration before saccades and in post-saccadic and arrive at pursuit velocities. Aging impairs the open-loop performance of the pursuit system possibly by decreasing sensitivity to.

"Monkey Wines, A Collection of Primate Approved Wine" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 17:07:47

is one of my favorites for many reasons. The label is taken from the scientific label for baboons which I immediately recognized when I saw it on the shelf at the grocery one day. The logo was cute and the price was right (under $10). Since Papio first launched it has partnered with the African Wildlife Foundation to defend some of Africa ’s most treasured primates such as the chimpanzee golden monkey mountain gorilla and bonobo along with their habitats. I accept it’s important to give wildlife and habitat conservation through consumer choice so I am a proud consumer of Papio even if it isn't a local booze (It's from CA). "Monkeys are such playful sociable animals. They’re a great reminder of what wine should be all about: having fun!" says the Papio label winemaker Erick Schultz in response to questions about the connection between the wine and monkeys.100% of Papio profits from merchandise sales go to the African Wildlife Foundation. If Santa doesn't carry me the I just might undergo to treat myself to one. And yes dad. I know I'm advertising for someone else but at least it's for a good create I support! Our local version of Papio has to be a wine that you'd instantly recognize from the chimp on the barrel on its label. I'd rather have one of DV's shirts but they don't donate to primate conservation and don't furnish tees so far as I know. It's hard enough to sight a bottle of their monkey wine for sale! Barrel Thief Red is one of the local "artisan" wines that are made here in small batches. It's my local favorite in the high-end be which for me starts at $18. We've got a bottle in our "cellar" waiting to be opened on a special cause. I prefer reds though very recently as in about two months ago. I tried some local chardonnay and found it surprisingly enjoyable. measure night we sampled some wines. We would undergo walked away with a bottle of their chardonnay had the booze tasting dwell attendant not been alternately distracted by her 5-year-old daughter playing with lighten bulbs in the lie window show and the material she herself read while pretending not to ignore us the only populate there. We left politely after she failed to hear my husband tell her we'd desire to buy a store. The winery does offer tasty affordable wines and supports local non-profit agencies namely women's organizations such as the YWCA. Maybe we'll go approve on a different night. After leaving Da Ma we stalked the Karastan rug we like in the furniture hold on that is closing up shop WITH DRASTIC PRICE REDUCTIONS ON EVERYTHING!!!!! (but the rug). Right now they're asking $550 but I only be to pay $350. I imagine someone else ordain go along who can actually drop to buy it at the determine the furniture dealers be. After passing on the rug we wound up in the tasting dwell of. We'd walked by several times but had never ventured in. It always looked like another hoity-toity joint that wouldn't be welcoming but I comfort always got a kick out its name. It reminded me of a very cute kids book I open in Paris several years ago. The book is called "Sapajou et Bonobo" and is about a unify of apes who go on the run from poachers. Sapajou is a lil desire Sapolil you see. Anyhow last night we went in and discovered that although the place is hoity-toity looking the wine-maker and his daughter are decidedly drink to earth. At one inform we ended up talking about toilet cover granted it was about a hypothetical "artisan toilet cover" made with lavender. We were there for hours drinking remove yummy booze and making new friends and for me a business communicate in the booze industry who I may be able to wholesale my cards to. We certainly got a lot more than the two bottles of wine we walked away with at the end of the evening. Just so you know I am not a wine snob. I'll share my philosophy of wine pricing and buying:(This only applies to red wine.)under $5 - Don't bother drinking it; add it to a spaghetti act.$6-12 - This is my alleviate govern. I'll try most things in this determine range and usually find that either the wine is enjoyable from the first sip or enjoyable after a beat glass.$13-18 - This stuff exceed be significantly better than good wines in the lesser price be in request for me to buy it again. I have to like it from the first sip.$19-32 - Special cause wine that exceed be incredibly good. Barrel Thief Red is in this group more than $32 - I'll be drinking on someone else's dime or in a smash-o restaurant on a very special occasion such as a 10 year anniversary getting my PhD or other event that only rarely occurs. And now you understand a little more why I feel spoiled to be in a cozy house in a wonderfully walkable neighborhood that is also walking distance to work parks downtown and dozens of wine tasting rooms. Did I have in mind there are 300 days of sunshine here? You wouldn't want to leave either. I'm a newly minted PhD who conducts interdisciplinary investigate on primate behavior. I have two dogs a Newfoundland puppy and an old spaniel mutt who make frequent appearances here. When I'm not looking for the ameliorate tenure-track lay. I spend time creating primate themed art and paper crafts.

"Scientists create first cloned primate embryo" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 22:09:22

PARIS: In bring home the bacon that could advance cloning of human cells for medical research scientists confirm their creation of the first cloned manipulate embryos. In a cover published online by the British journal Nature a team in the U. S said they had created cloned embryos of rhesus macaques using the same method that famously led to Dolly the Sheep and other genetically duplicated animals. Cosmos Online first reported the discovery in June 2007 when lead researcher Shoukhrat Mitalipov announced it at a conference in Cairns. Australia (see. Cosmos Online). It represented the first measure that this technique has been successfully used to act cloned primate embryos. Mitalipov's aggroup of the Oregon National Primate investigate Centre in Beaverton. U. S. subsequently generated two lines of embryonic originate in cells from the embryos. Dolly the world's first cloned animal was created in 1996 by using so-called somatic cell nuclear assign (SCNT) in which the genetic core of an egg is removed and replaced with the nucleus of an adult cell. The egg is then stimulated with chemicals or a move of electricity to prompt its division. The list of other cloned creatures using SCNT includes mice pigs cats cows and dogs. Until now though there has been no cloned primate for researchers have encountered obstacles that cause cell development to be catastrophically flawed. bring home the bacon on primate cloning has also stirred controversy among ethicists who say it could open the door to cloning human beings not just cells. Researchers identify between "reproductive cloning" of humans in which a putative cloned baby would be born and "therapeutic cloning," in which only cloned cells would be used for medical reasons and no baby would result. Helen Wallace of Genewatch U. K. a assort that monitors cloning and other activities in biotechnology said the breakthrough would create "a real worry" in some quarters that it would bid a dissent scientist to act a cloned do by. "The clear assay of an investigate [in human reproductive cloning] is of a deformed baby and maternal suffering," she said. "In Britain we don't think that the technology is going to go that far because there are laws against reproductive cloning… However in most countries around the world there are no legal safeguards." Stem cells are immature cells that develop into the specific tissues of the body. Embryonic originate in cells have the highest capability of all because they can differentiate into any tissue. Scientists hope to be able to coax these cells into one day becoming replacement create from raw material for organs that are damaged or diseased. Transplanted cells from a donor though run the risk of being attacked as intruders by the patient's immune system. By creating originate in cells that are programmed with the patient's own DNA the assay of rejection would be skirted. Mitalipov's team now say they collected 304 eggs also known as oocytes from 14 female rhesus macaques. The donor nucleus came from skin cells taken from an adult male monkey housed at the Oregon National Primate Research Centre. The claim that the stem cells were an claim DNA write of the donor manipulate's genetic label has been validated independently by a aggroup led by David stuff of Monash University in Melbourne. Australia. In a commentary published in the same issue of Nature. British scientist Ian Wilmut (the creator of Dolly) and colleague Jane Taylor of the displace for Regenerative care for in Edinburgh. Scotland said the new advance's brightest benefits may lie not in creating replacement tissue from stem cells but in unlocking basic knowledge about inherited disorders. By making patient-specific cells doctors could obtain cells whose genome would provide tell-tale clues of disease. These cells could be compared with healthy counterparts to see what is do by and a library of drugs could then be screened to see if a treatment is available. "Ultimately this come might lead to treatments for neurodegenerative diseases some cancers and psychiatric disorders," the pair said.

"MEPs call for end to primate experiments in the EU" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 18:50:36

The European equip has responded to a written declaration from the European Parliament on the use of primates in experiments by emphasising the ethical analyse procedures that are in displace for EU-funded investigate and that have already led to the rejection of investigate involving primates. The declaration signed by over 400 MEPs urges the equip the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament to use the revision of the Directive on animals used for scientific and other experimental purposes as an opportunity to: - alter ending the use of apes and wild-caught monkeys in scientific experiments an urgent priority; - establish a timetable for replacing the use of all primates in scientific experiments with alternatives. The Commission states that it is currently working on a revision of the Directive and adds that 'All the research activities carried out under the Framework create by mental act must be carried out in compliance with fundamental ethical principles.' The Commission instigates an ethical analyse of any investigate proposals that raise sensitive ethical issues. 'Research involving the use of primates is always submitted to ethical analyse. In fact the one communicate rejected in the Sixth Framework create by mental act on ethical grounds was a communicate that involved the use of primates. It shows that the European Commission's ethical review is capable of restricting the use of primates in investigate,' reads a equip statement. 'Furthermore the use of available alternatives is always compulsory in conformity with the application of the 3R principle (Reduction. Refinement and Replacement of the use of animals in research) as part of the scientific and ethical review.' According to the Parliament more than 10,000 primates are used in experiments every year in EU laboratories. However public opinion is largely against such practices: the declaration points out that more than 80% of those participating in a 2006 public consultation considered the use of primates in experiments as unacceptable. The main arguments against the use of primates in experiments are: bear witness that primates suffer immensely when in captivity; 26% of primate species are in danger of extinction and wild-caught primates are comfort being used in laboratories; it will be difficult to defend primates from advance threats such as human consumption if the West is at the same time using these species in experiments; there are important differences between humans and other primates meaning that the results of studies using primates are not always applicable to humans; advanced technology and techniques now offer alternative methods that are more efficient and reliable than primate experiments. UK MEP and co-sponsor of the declaration welcomed its adoption by the Parliament saying: 'Advancements in technology have provided alternative 'evaluate' methods that are proving to be more efficient and reliable than primate experiments and ending the use of monkeys and apes in scientific trials must now be a priority.' Fellow UK MEP David Martin added: 'Primates are so change state to humans in their social mental and emotional functions that putting them through the extreme trauma of scientific testing should be unthinkable. Aside from this consideration scientific tests on primates are often bad science and many of the species being used are endangered in the wild.' The Director of the Eurogroup for Animals welcomed the Declaration and urged the equip to now put in place a strategy as well as resources to achieve a phase-out of experiments involving primates as a be of urgency.
